I collect reproductions of early 60’s vintage Barbie dolls and Enjoy dressing them in A combination of vintage and vintage reproduction clothes, modern pieces and garments that I make myself and alter. It’s my hobby. I don’t make fun of your hobbies and believe me I COULD. The result of this is that my dolls wear vintage clothes the way I do- as part of an outfit That looks modern and classic rather than a cutesy, matchy-matchy period costume. While I have a good many of them, I find the vintage/repro dresses and glamorous gowns to be far too limiting to achieve a modern vintage look. So, finding clothes for them is also something of a Side hobby. It is a less enjoyable one to be certain. First off, I don’t know where they get off calling this a complete look since there are no shoes and possibly also no bottom to to go with this pink and black polka-dot...item. Is it a dress? A tunic? Some sort of maternity Or beauty parlor smock? Whatever it’s supposed to be, it’s very, very, VERY large. My best guess is that it’s intended for the newfangled chonky Barbies but if that is indeed the case- WHY ON EARTH DOESN’T SAY SO ON THE PACKAGE?! If the point of the “body diverse” dolls is to normalize non-skinny human bodies, I fail to see why there shouldn’t be special clothes for those dolls which are labelled as such. That’s how it works with people-clothes. They have size-tags; there are specialty retailers and departments in stores for large, tall and petite sizes. By the way- this isn’t just a problem with Modern, play-line Barbie doll clothes. I recently purchased two Ken outfits for my Reproduction Allen doll and found that While the trousers fit fine and even a bit roomy the shirt would NOT close. This is not a “broad” Body fashionista Ken body or one of the Hunky, Molded muscles 70s & 80’s Ken bodies. This is the early 60’s iteration with a slender, swimmer’s build. Also, in re the polka dot smock- I find the dot pattern to be almost but not quite- too large in scale for the doll. While the dot is just on the edge of being out of scale, I can only guess that a pattern of this size would look extremely unflattering a Plus size Barbie doll, as a print of comparable size would look on a zaftig Human lady; large prints make a large body look larger. If, on the other hand, these outfits are intended to be worn by ALL barbies, irrespective of size then this outfit is a failure on that point as well. The print and size would swallow one of the petite dolls whole- as a garment of that size in a print of that scale would a petite woman. A tall doll would not only swim in it, it might be a long top necessitating a bottom underneath and still, unflatteringly large and baggy. I did try it on one of my dolls-still fully dressed, mind you. And though I wouldn’t dream of humiliating either of us with a photo of that, it is of a decent length on her. So, on a taller doll, it might make for a large, very unflattering tunic top though I’m puzzled as to what might go under it. But, on a positive note- and the reason for giving three stars instead of one like other disappointed reviewers or the two that I had originally intended- the accessories are ADORABLE. They were the reason that I bought this set in the first place. As for the dress, I think that after I take About 3/4 of an inch on either side of the seam at the back, it will probably make a cute mini-dress. That’s the saving grace here and of Barbie clothes in general- there’s usually one big seam at the Back, making size adjustments relatively simple. I wouldn’t recommend simply cutting off the closure and attempting to resew it. I plan on unpicking the seam and the (YUCK!) Velcro, placing a new seam in back up to the waist, folding in the wider seam allowances and tacking them into place on top before placing closures and then trimming the excess on the lower part of the garment. If you don’t opt to take it in, or you are one of those pitiful unfortunates who can’t sew, may I humbly suggest that you belt it. Even the fat dolls have a waist( something that cannot be said for many of the women that these dolls are supposedly meant to emulate) there’s no sense in hiding it. If Mattel is going to be in the plus size doll clothes business, it may behoove them to consider consulting people who design for larger women because I have yet to see any of these larger dolls in clothes that a larger woman would be caught dead in.
