Fun D&D board game.
Fun game. Painted figurines were a plus and worth the additional cost. It took a couple games to get the hang of it, and is easily played with two playersWeiterlesen

Weiterlesen

As advertised
Nice premium pre-painted miniatures, and a decent board-game. References some elements from the "Storm King's Thunder" D&D module / adventure, but isn't exactly the same. Miniatures are not the same scale used for D&D - they are 1 size category smaller, i.e. monsters / creatures that are Huge are only Large, and Medium ones are Small.Weiterlesen

Assault of the Giants is not Storm King's Thunder
Storm King's Thunder is one of the best module's that has been publishes within the last few years. I am a huge fan of giants and to bring them together in a well written epic adventure is a great job by WotC. Having said that, this game is not Storm King's Thunder though I truly hoped it would incorporate more of the adventure into the game. Pros - Can play up to 6 players without problem though it takes up a lot of table territory Sturdy and good cardboard components. Lots of resources to manage. Has miniatures for all the giants. Premium version minis are painted. Standard edition minis are not painted Unique dice. Not that many rules. Lots of flavor text but not that many pages of actual rules. Has good strategy and with up to 6 players, can be intricate. I do like the command cards and how they interplay. Nice mechanic. Short play time. CONS - The game does not follow Storm King's Module. Though it has pieces and references, it really is about giants killing giants. The map is small. It does show the entire Savage Frontier but when moving 6 races of giants about, it feels tiny. The minis are NOT full sized. For a $100 game I did expect them to be. I could have done with one less giant champion per race to have larger minis. There should have been a cloud castle mini and not a card board token. Same for the fire titan. it would have been a wow factor to have the fire titan roaming the board. Same for the cloud castle. Though there are a lot of things to do, its always the same things to do. The small map also makes the same strategy for each giant race. Not sure how much replay value it will have. Short game play. That can be a good thing but it really feels like when you just have your giant army figured out, the game ends. That could be as easy as having more ordining points. Also, your giant race is assigned by where you sit at the table, not by choice. I think that is a poor design. The rules can be a bit vague for some areas. The battles seem overly simplified. There is only one round of combat. It is fast and furious but if you aren't prepared for combat, your giant host will die quickly. The game had nothing about the Oracle. Imiryth is a small side quest in the game. Not to mention no Harshnag which are all critical points in the module. And a picky point. For an intricate game, I think something better than just re purposed 6 sided dice would have made it a better game. Sometimes rolling the dice during battles feels more like Yahtzee than being in a battle of giants. OVERVIEW - It is a good game. Not sure you want to pay $50 extra for painted 3/4 size minis especially when they could have had a better mix. The game is about battling giants and only loosely follows the module so be prepared. And you don't get to choose which giant race you play. The game is short and may only go around 3 or 4 times. It is a interesting and fun game if you are into D&D giants. For it to be a wow game, it could have done a better job on game mechanics and variable strategy.Weiterlesen
